AbbVie in Ireland

We’re a modern biopharmaceutical business with a significant footprint in Ireland that’s focused on novel and breakthrough therapies for tough-to-treat diseases and unmet medical needs, with a reputation for quality.

About AbbVie in Ireland

AbbVie is spread across five sites in Ireland. Alongside three manufacturing facilities in Sligo and Cork, two offices in Dublin serve the needs of the company’s Commercial and Operations activities.

Our company creates new medicines for chronic, serious health issues by combining advanced science with deep knowledge of diseases. We harness Irish expertise in complex chemical and biological research, testing discoveries through clinical trials as well as manufacturing many of our medicines and delivery devices here in Ireland.

In this way, Ireland contributes to every part of the medicine discovery process before our commercial team works to make these new treatments rapidly accessible to Irish patients.

AbbVie Sligo—Manorhamilton Road

AbbVie Ireland operates two separate plants in Sligo employing more than 400 staff. The company’s high containment facility on the Manorhamilton Road was established in 2002 and has dedicated capabilities for potent active pharmaceutical ingredient and drug product manufacturing.

The quality control labs are equipped with the latest design technology for chemical and microbiological analytical testing to meet customers’ needs. This site recently underwent a significant €85 million expansion that doubled its footprint and provided additional capability to support AbbVie’s new product introductions.

AbbVie Sligo—Ballytivnan

AbbVie has a second manufacturing site in Sligo at Ballytivnan. Founded in 1974, this plant is now a global centre of excellence for design control and precision engineering in the production of drug delivery devices.

Among the products made at this location are components for a pen-style device used by patients who have been prescribed a company treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis and other immune-mediated inflammatory conditions.

AbbVie recently announced a €113 million expansion in oncology-focused manufacturing technology at the Ballytivnan site. The investment in new sterile manufacturing capability will create approximately 100 new jobs over the course of three years in a variety of technical and manufacturing positions.

AbbVie Cork—Carrigtwohill

The company’s plant in Carrigtwohill, on the outskirts of Cork, is a modern ‘bulk tablet’ finish facility which manufactures solid and capsule formulations.

Innovative new technologies, in combination with the depth of expertise that exists within the local workforce, has allowed those based there to develop and deliver products and processes to support AbbVie’s wider global needs. These range from small-scale clinical trial supply to large-scale commercial manufacturing.
