AbbVie in Ireland

We’re a modern biopharmaceutical company with a significant footprint in Ireland. Redefining what is possible is our business and our passion.

AbbVie now employs approximately 2,600 employees across six sites in Ireland. Alongside five manufacturing facilities in Cork, Dublin, Sligo and Mayo, two offices in Dublin serve the needs of the company’s Commercial, Supply Chain and Operations activities. Our goal is to help people lead healthier lives and we are proud to be a great place to work.

AbbVie’s mission is to use its expertise, dedicated people and unique approach to innovation to markedly improve treatments across a number of therapeutic areas, including immunology, oncology, virology, aesthetics, neuroscience and eye care.

We harness Irish expertise in complex chemical and biological research, testing discoveries through clinical trials as well as manufacturing many of our medicines and delivery devices here in Ireland.

In this way, Ireland contributes to every part of the medicines discovery process before our commercial team works to make these new treatments rapidly accessible to Irish patients.

AbbVie Cork

Located in an Irish pharmaceuticals hub on the outskirts of Cork, the company’s plant in Carrigtwohill is a modern ‘bulk tablet’ facility manufacturing solid and capsule formulations to deliver life-changing medicines in key therapeutic areas such as oncology and virology. From its beginnings in 2002, this state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility has adapted and grown to almost 14,000 sq. m. The site recently marked its 20th anniversary with the announcement of a €60 million expansion that will create 70 jobs.

Innovative new technologies, in combination with the depth of expertise that exists within the local workforce, has allowed those based there to develop and deliver products and processes to support AbbVie’s wider global needs. These range from small-scale clinical trial supply to large-scale commercial manufacturing.

AbbVie North Dublin

The AbbVie Clonshaugh pharmaceutical manufacturing site in north Dublin was established in 1994. The site specialises in the manufacture of tablets and capsules, primarily in the therapeutic areas of neuroscience and gastrointestinal conditions. The manufacturing capability at the location extends across a range of technologies, including multiple releases and a range of manufacturing techniques, to deliver on a broad portfolio of capsules and tablets.

The site has also recently undergone a significant refurbishment and is now also an international base for a range of supply chain, manufacturing, engineering services and supports AbbVie plants all around the world.

The quality control labs are equipped with the latest design technology for chemical and microbiological analytical testing to meet customers’ needs. This site recently underwent a significant €85 million expansion that doubled its footprint and provided additional capability to support AbbVie’s new product introductions.

AbbVie Sligo—Ballytivnan

AbbVie has a second manufacturing site in Sligo at Ballytivnan. Established in 1974, this plant is now a global centre of excellence for design control and precision engineering in the production of drug delivery devices.

AbbVie recently completed a €113 million oncology-focused manufacturing technology expansion at the Ballytivnan site. The investment in new sterile manufacturing capability will create approximately 100 new jobs in a variety of technical and manufacturing positions.

AbbVie Westport

Established in 1977, AbbVie’s Westport facility employs approximately 1,300 people and is a centre of excellence for aseptic sterile manufacturing. The campus has grown to almost 750,000 sq. ft. on a 61-acre campus, and it encompasses a pharmaceuticals facility, two biologics plants and an ocular implant facility that manufactures a range of leading eye care products.

The €160 million second biologics facility was opened in early 2020. The new facility features a state-of-the-art microbiology and cell-based laboratory with world-class technology and research and development capabilities to support advances in discovery, development and manufacturing.
