Supporting Science Education

AbbVie aspires, alongside a wide range of stakeholders, to help transform education by narrowing the achievement gap in science and literacy. The company is committed to making resources available to students today so that they are prepared to succeed tomorrow.

Lighting the STEM spark

AbbVie champions science education programmes in our local communities to inspire more young people to pursue careers in life sciences. Our Back to School for STEM initiative highlights science role models who are active in the Irish workplace. Led by AbbVie employees – including team members from our manufacturing facilities – the programme works to increase students’ awareness of the exciting career opportunities that studying STEM subjects can offer.

AbbVie also supports the national STEM Teacher Internship (STInt) programme, sponsors science festivals and Transition Year-focused engagements.

Stripe Young Scientist Exhibition & Technology Exhibition

To further demonstrate the company’s commitment to advancing science education, AbbVie became a Gold sponsor of the Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition in 2026. With over 30,000 attendees, the event is one of Europe’s largest STEM gatherings, and many former participants have gone on to successful careers in science, research and technology.

More than 40 AbbVie volunteers from our sites across Ireland attended the event to speak with parents, students and other with visitors about their careers and roles within the company.

AbbVie sponsored the AbbVie Health & Wellbeing Award at the event, which was won by Leah Winters, Shona Kinahan and Ella Hamm of Moate Community School, Westmeath, for their project "Ferma-Aid: Using Fermentation to Produce Nutritious, Easily Digestible, and Sustainable Emergency Food Aid." The award was presented by Cormac Dalton, VP Sterile Fill, Manufacturing, Contracting and Engineering (ME&C) at AbbVie. Cormac also presented the AbbVie Educator of Excellence Award to Karina Lyne of Coláiste Choilm, Cork.

Access to STEM Opportunities

AbbVie and Atlantic Technological University (ATU) recently announced a new five-year educational partnership. This includes the establishment of a new ‘AbbVie Scholarship’ programme, which supports future STEM talent across the northwest region. The partnership also involves naming the main auditorium at the ATU Sligo campus the ‘AbbVie Auditorium’.

The AbbVie Scholarship programme will support students from less advantaged and underprivileged backgrounds by providing an annual bursary to help cover the cost of attending third-level education. The initiative is designed to ensure that more students have access to opportunities in STEM.
