AbbVie is a global, research-driven pharmaceutical company. Through our diverse and innovative portfolio of medicines and approaches, we seek to create impact for patients, health systems and the Irish economy.
AbbVie employs approximately 2,900 employees across six sites in Ireland. Alongside five manufacturing facilities in Cork, Dublin, Sligo and Mayo, two offices in Dublin serve the needs of the company’s Commercial and Operations activities. Our goal is to help people lead healthier lives and we are proud to be a great place to work.
AbbVie’s mission is to use its expertise, dedicated people and unique approach to innovation to markedly improve treatments across a number of therapeutic areas, including immunology, oncology, virology, aesthetics, neuroscience and eye care.
We harness expertise in complex chemical and biological research, testing discoveries through clinical trials as well as manufacturing many of our medicines and delivery devices here in Ireland.
In this way, Ireland contributes to every part of the medicines discovery process before our commercial team works to make these new treatments accessible to Irish patients.
AbbVie Cork
Located in an Irish pharmaceuticals hub on the outskirts of Cork, the company’s plant in Carrigtwohill is a modern ‘bulk tablet’ facility manufacturing solid and capsule formulations to deliver life-changing medicines in key therapeutic areas such as oncology and virology.
Innovative new technologies, in combination with the depth of expertise that exists within the local workforce, has allowed those based there to develop and deliver products and processes to support AbbVie’s wider global needs. These range from small-scale clinical trial supply to large-scale commercial manufacturing.
AbbVie operates two separate plants in Sligo employing approximately 700 people. The company’s high containment facility on the Manorhamilton Road was established in 2002 and has dedicated capabilities for potent active pharmaceutical ingredient and drug product manufacturing.
The quality control labs are equipped with the latest design technology for chemical and microbiological analytical testing to meet customers’ needs. Since inception, the site has undergone a significant expansion that doubled its footprint and provided additional capability to support AbbVie’s new product introductions.
AbbVie has a second manufacturing site in Sligo at Ballytivnan. Founded in 1974, this plant is now a global centre of excellence for design control and precision engineering in the production of drug delivery devices.
AbbVie recently completed a €113 million expansion in oncology-focused manufacturing technology (aseptic filling, lyophilisation and finishing) at the Ballytivnan site. The investment in new sterile manufacturing capability has added approximately 100 new jobs in a variety of technical and manufacturing positions.
Established in 1977, AbbVie’s Westport facility employs more than 1,400 people and is a centre of excellence for aseptic sterile manufacturing. The campus encompasses a pharmaceuticals facility, two biologics plants and an ocular implant facility that manufactures a range of leading eye care products.
A €160 million second biologics facility was opened in early 2020. It features a state-of-the-art microbiology and cell-based laboratory with world-class technology and research and development capabilities to support advances in discovery, development and manufacturing.
The AbbVie pharmaceutical manufacturing site in north Dublin was established in 1994. This location specialises in the manufacture of tablets and capsules, primarily in the therapeutic areas of neuroscience and gastrointestinal conditions. This location’s manufacturing capability extends across a range of technologies, including multiple releases and a range of manufacturing techniques, to deliver on a broad portfolio of capsules and tablets.
The site recently underwent a significant refurbishment and is now also an international base for a range of supply chain, manufacturing and engineering services. AbbVie North Dubin now supports AbbVie plants all around the world.
The company’s commercial offices are located at the Citywest office campus, west Dublin. Close to 100 people work here overseeing the sale, supply, distribution and marketing of the company’s licensed products in Ireland.
